The Most Influential Fashion Trends, Decade by Decade

The Most Influential Fashion Trends, Decade by Decade

In the course of history, 100 years isn’t a particularly long time. But in the course of fashion history, it’s the difference between trying to get around in a bone-cinching girdle and ankle-length skirt and easing into the Nike leggings and Vans sneakers you’re probably wearing today. In the intervening years, there have been major shifts in technology, politics, culture, and social norms, and fashion has reflected that in its ever-changing cycle of trends. From the sky-high platforms of the ’70s to the high-waisted bikinis of the ’40s, we see plenty of the popular looks of decades past serving as inspiration for designers today. Below, take a look back at the most influential trends from the 1900s through today (and see which ones you’d actually still consider wearing).

The Edwardian period saw the introduction of the “S-bend” or “health” corset, a style that altered the wearer’s posture and (shocker)

A Podiatrist Says This Top Shoe Trend Is Killing Your Feet

A Podiatrist Says This Top Shoe Trend Is Killing Your Feet

We all know this feeling. You slip into a new pair of shoes, walk a few minutes, and immediately regret the decision. But beauty, er, style is pain, right? Um, no. The whole concept of enduring anything uncomfortable in the “name of fashion” is not only an age-old concept but flat-out ridiculous at this point. To that, it’s smart to err on the side of caution when it comes to many footwear styles—yes, even the most gorgeous pairs out there. Sure, some silhouettes may be fun to look at, but if they’re ultimately a pain culprit, it’s just not worth it. And believe it or not, there’s currently one It shoe trend we all might need to reconsider, despite its popularity.

We touched base with podiatrist Miguel Cunha, founder of Gotham Footcare in NYC, to fill us in on the popular shoes that could be killing your feet. The offender? … Read the rest

Fashion Girls Are Ditching Their Tees for These Trendy Tanks

Fashion Girls Are Ditching Their Tees for These Trendy Tanks

Perhaps “ditching” isn’t the right word as, in my case at least, I’ll simply be carefully relocating my stack of (beloved) white T-shirts in order to give some better real estate to the three tank top styles you’re about to see for the remainder of summer. Even so, that’s a rare occurrence for me, but something about these currently trending tanks just feels so much fresher than a T-shirt, though they still lend themselves to that effortless and classic look we all love.

Had I been alone in this opinion, I may have spared you the rant, but it seems that a handful of our favorite fashion girls also feel the same—and are showing it on the ’gram—just as we’re reaching peak summer weather. To see the three tank top styles girls are temporarily casting aside their tees for, get some styling inspiration along the way, and, of course, … Read the rest

This Is How Princesses and Queens Dress in Paris

This Is How Princesses and Queens Dress in Paris

Royal fashion choices are often subjected to intense scrutiny—or, in our case, constant adoration—so you can be sure they choose their outfits with painstaking attention to detail no matter where they are. That said, it’s clear that princesses, duchesses, and queens step their game up even more while in one city in particular: Paris, of course.

As the bonafide fashion capital of the world, Paris calls for extra-special outfits, and royals definitely know how to deliver. I did some photo research and some sartorial themes became immediately apparent: Royals often choose leather jackets, Chanel bags, black trousers, and beaded gowns for their trips to Paris. Need proof? Scroll down to see how Kate Middleton, Princess Charlene, Princess Deena, Queen Rania, Queen Letizia, and others dress in Paris, and shop the items they swear by—no flight required.

Princess Charlene and Queen Rania are on the same wavelength when it comes … Read the rest
